Chapter 2

Isolated

Small towns are quiet, and many featured in this essay do not have street lights, or even paved roads. When making the journey to these small towns, I felt as if I was in the middle of nowhere. After spending time in these small towns, I have realized that this isolation gives a small town its identity. They are supposed to feel as if you are in the middle of nowhere, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t somewhere. You are where you can breathe, and where you can see the stars at night. You can hear the meadowlarks’ melody,  the church bells ringing from all the way across town, and even the rumble of the train can be felt from blocks away. This is the peace and solitude you do not experience in a big city.
